So, last we left off our heroes, they were exploring the caves trying to rout out the Plague Master. They now have an army of the Plague Master’s men, though it seems that Vazenus, the assassin hired to kill the Plague Master, has an ulterior motive. What is it? Well, let’s find out!
So the new scene deals with the minions who discuss that they’d rather not have Vazenus on the group due to some of them figuring out that Vazenus tried to off them. Vazenus tried to bluff, but Deen instantly calls him out on it and calls to execute him right there and then. It’s come to my realization that these guys are priests, but they’re from Egypt…
So… perhaps… Hmm…
Nah, they wouldn’t be the villains, since Zazamoukh was also with them when the plague hit, so they’re determined to get rid of him. So Zazamoukh is gonna try to persuade the group to calm down and let Vazenus stay for now.
He rolls a natural 20 and succeeds, leading the group to spare Vazenus… for now. As they journey on, one of the minions triggers a trap. Thankfully, the minion knew better than to breathe in the toxic fumes and got out of there before the trap could make the situation worse. Unfortunately, trouble followed the group as the gas leaked into the next room and although the minions were adjusted to the traps, they couldn’t prepare themselves for very long and the poison killed them.
The group spend a few minutes to give them a small funeral, only for the next wave of the Plague Master’s minions to follow. They were more prepared for the poison. The battle commences as their wizard conjures a wall of fire to keep us penned in while eighteen of the minions shoot a volley of arrows at Deen. Zazamoukh summons a Celestial Hawk to protect the group, but does very little to fight and is even defeated by one of the soldier’s weapons.
By the time Deen gets a turn, he uses Dispel Magic to cancel the Wall of Fire while Vazenus disguises himself as one of the soldiers. However, a majority of the group see through Vazenus’ disguise as he enters into their fray and they pretty much swarm him. Vazenus manages to deflect most of the daggers towards him with his rapier, but the Sage sends a lightning bolt that devastates the group.
Fortunately, Zazamoukh freezes a majority of the minions surrounding Vazenus and Deen, instead of saving Vazenus, instead kills one of the Wardens. Unfortunately, the guards manage to knock both Vazenus and Deen out and placed them in critical condition. Eventually, their leader knocks out Para as well and the group surround Zazamoukh. Rather than end with a TPK like I had hoped, I’ll instead have the group carry Zazamoukh to their master’s lair so that he can do the obligatory villain speech.
Zazamoukh is brought to the throne room of the Plague Master, where he pretty much gloats about how he’ll destroy Egypt and bring about his new god to Egypt’s ashes. However, in the midst of his gloating, Vazenus managed to sneak up and backstab him, fulfilling his contract. Unfortunately, Vazenus also reveals that he has a “no witnesses” policy and attempts to take out Zazamoukh. Before Zazamoukh could attempt to silence the assassin by invoking Vazenus’ true name and slaying him with it, Vazenus quickly assassinates the priest and leaves him to die amidst the deceased people who followed the Plague Master.
Well… That was something. I ended up using a few Backstory Cards’ effects to string together this rather dark ending. The game had its hits and misses for me. I loved the battle with the huge group that nearly ended in a TPK, but found most other fights to be pretty boring. There sadly wasn’t as much Testament Lore weaved into the game as the last session, and the finale just seemed pretty rushed in my mind. But, that’s the way the cookie crumbles. Testament is still enjoyable for me. Well, happy Easter, and Bon Voyage, gamers!
