While RPG Solo wasn’t the best at generating adventures, what got me hooked onto it was how well it kept my interest by offering an instant “copy to forum” option, which enabled me to paste into my Actual Play thread. The ease of how everything worked made me want more, and so, I made a second campaign under this system: Being an Energy Rider is Suffering. This was set during a zombie apocalypse, like the first full-fledged campaign I tried to run.
Unlike the other campaign though, this is your typical, run of the mill zombie virus infecting people. The big twist though is that zombies can be controlled. Unfortunately, these zombies are being controlled by gangs who would rather use these zombies for crimes. The only hope to stop them lies in the Sonic Arrow, a bow and arrow that has its frequencies tuned to the same kind that controls the zombies, thus overrides and even disables them.
This Sonic Arrow was made by Hope’s Peak, a scientist haven where they’re working round the clock to find a cure. The weapon is given to someone who found this zombie apocalypse thing to be the perfect excuse to try and be a hero.
I made this with a sort of time-keeping system in mind. The way it works is that I kept track of my character’s health, infection rate, food, the weather, the time remaining, and even fame. In my opinion, I liked this system a lot more than the simple hero ranking system, since there’s a lot more info to extrapolate from it.
Our game opens with Cid getting a letter from Hope’s Peak that tells him that… psychic rats are going to take over a KFC that they turned into a lab. Buh-guh-ugh… What!?
Okay, so… this is my first time interacting with what RPG Solo calls “Mark’s Adventuring Glyphs”. They use the same Game-Icons as Zero Tangent, but rolls up to 9 of them Story Cubes style. And so I used all nine symbols to create a Secret of NIMH-style story in the middle of a zombie apocalypse…
So… Not only was this the second campaign I’ve played that is set in a zombie apocalypse, but also the first to involve mutated rats in some capacity? Why? Why was this a thing? This shouldn’t have been a thing! I was just fine with avoiding gangsters with zombies while shooting them with a bow and arrow meant to screw with the frequencies of zombies, but now I involve mutant rats?
This is like the time I had mutant rats in a banana republic version of Westeros! I MADE A WALKING DEAD/SECRET OF NIMH CROSSOVER RPG WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME!? FIRST SKAVEN TAKE OVER GUATEMALA WESTEROS AND NOW THIS!?
Anyways, Cid makes his journey to Hope’s Peak, with a benevolent gang giving him a soldier. The first landmark he comes across is an old parking lot where a detective is boarding up the mansion to better defend himself. We help him and the detective offers a place to stay. I decide sure, but then zombies attack at 1 in the morning. There’s a bit of a siege as the trio try to stave off the zombie hoard.
After that, Cid and the bodyguard travel to another part of the town where an old friend of Cid’s comes by and asks to help him kill someone at a corpse-choked school…
Then we got ambushed and killed by zombies. Rather anti-climatic again, though I guess that’s what you get with these sorts of games. Personally, like with the superhero game, I wouldn’t mind taking another swing at this with the tools I have at my disposal now. Heck, I managed to buy a hex-mapping tool that I could use for future RPGs, so that’d be cool.
But, with that, it is the end of me reminiscing on the past when it comes to playing RPGs solo. Outside of an undocumented experiment playing a Marvel FASERIP module without really understanding how to play it, that’s pretty much it as far as past experiences go. All we can do now is look to the future…
And that’s exactly what I’m going to be doing. Next week will be taking a look at an experimental oracle that is pretty out of this world.
